Autumn envelops the mountains in a mantle of warm colours, the leaves of the trees turn a thousand shades, creating a fairytale landscape. Far from the hustle and bustle of summer, autumn in Carnia is synonymous with peace and relaxation. It is the ideal time to immerse yourself in nature, take long walks and enjoy the silence of the mountains. But autumn is also the season of Halloween, a festival full of mystery and magic that here has distant roots in Celtic rituals.
It is called the Not Dalis Muars and is an ancient ritual that evokes the celtic new year. In Friulian, 'muars' means carved pumpkins, the symbol of this festival that has been handed down for centuries. It is said that at one time, when the Carnic lands were inhabited by the Celts, mysterious rites were celebrated that still resonate in these traditions today. On the night between 31 October and 1 November, the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead was thinned, allowing the spirits to return to the places they had inhabited. For one night, the past, present and future intertwined in one magical dance.
